It's craft fair season - and I'm missing out

Thursday, November 6, 2014 •

A2 Designs is still on a break. It was an incredibly difficult decision to make to take a break. But I couldn't keep up with my late father in law's illness and death and trying to get through the summer. I thought that I would start up again in the Fall and be back in full swing in time for the Holiday Fairs. I miss my crafting mommas and the time that I used to have hanging out with them at fairs. I have been inspired and encouraged by them and love how we laugh, come up with ideas and have a great time at the events. What I don't miss are the endless hours of sewing, seam ripping, guessing what will be popular, trying to stock the right fabrics.

All the stress and very late prep nights slowly took away my desire to sew for fun. I took a break and just focused on fun sewing. I've created quilts, pjs, dresses and fun little things. I'm making a dent in my fabric stash and enjoying creating something from scratch.

Don't get me wrong, I love sewing for others and I love seeing my designs and creations being enjoyed by others. What I didn't love was the overhead that came with fair prep and having to justify why a handmade dress made with high quality premium fabric was worth $50. One too many requests for a discount or a deal from the lady who's child had on a $45 Gymboree sweater that she just had to have for her as soon as it came to the store (thanks for telling me you paid full price even though it was made in a factory- seriously cute though right? *le sigh*).

It's difficult to see other markets that crafters have huge success with a similar item at a higher price point and are able to justify the time and effort it takes to make each and every creation.

I think this is a very well written article about pricing of handmade goods. (Thanks to Sarah Dhooge for sharing this with the Momma Collective Community)

Paying for handmade a gentle rant

I am thrilled for the mommas that are able to make it work, and love that I still get to work with some of those amazing ladies on products that their customers love (FYI- Home Grown Goods will soon be fully stocked with chalk mats again- and Frozen will be in the mix!).

I will still go to the fairs and support these incredible women and I remain committed to having a local Christmas for all of the gifts that our family gives others. I will still feature my favorite local holiday ideas and showcase these talented entrepreneurs. That's my way of doing my part for this community that has given me so much.

WIP Wednesday

Look what I just finished :)

I LOVE this dress. It is beyond sweet. And looks adorable on the little who will be wearing it for her first communion  this weekend. I used a white Robert Kaufman for the main fabric and used Cottontails from the AGF Studio's Littlest Collection for the accent.

Here is my current selfish sewing (i.e not paid) project list. You'll notice this hasn't changed much from the last time. I've been really busy with A2 Designs orders but once I wrap up the last few projects I'm working on I'm going to take a break from orders to get my own stuff done. I do have a birthday party to plan and a wedding cake to make!

  1. Baby blanket for Rhys (fabric cut)
  2. Birthday dress for Miss K (fabric cut)
  3. Zigzag quilt for Amelia (fabric cut)
  4. Toddler top (fabric selected)
  5. Toddler top (fabric selected)
  6. PJ pants for Austin (He picked the fabric and will help sew them up!)
That list doesn't include my A Squared Designs work which gets done before the selfish sewing does.

So that's my WIP...what do you have on the go?

WIP- Work in Progress Wednesday (2 days late)

I guess I should explain why my posts have been very infrequently lately. I've got several projects on the go and have been trying to get a whole lot finished! This has been a pretty successful week for that thus far and now I need to catch you all up!

Kids Clothes Week was another fun week and I am very proud of how my projects turned out. Usually I try to finish the items before the week, get them photographed and then blog them. I also work full time and am trying to spend as much time with my kids as possible so you can see why I'm behind :) It's a lot of work but it's so worth it to me. I love sharing what we've been up to.

I took Amelia's Easter dress apart and took it up at the waist. Then I made Austin a matching tie. 2 hours at Andrea's, a container of goldfish and one cousin nap later we got the pictures! I love how they turned out. Here is a sneak peek:

I just love this fabric collection...and I love how handsome my little CEO looks :) He hammed it up for Andrea and the camera pretty good.

Kids Clothes Week- Project 2

Thursday, April 10, 2014 •

Clearly it is not Day 2 of KCW but I'm still sewing away and am looking at the week in terms of projects. I would have had another one finished last night only to discover that I only had enough I wanted to use for the skirt to do half a skirt...I called the fabric store and was told they still had it so I sent hubby there today to pick some up. (Ladies...that is love...a man who will go to the fabric store, deal with the fabric ladies and look through bolts and bolts of fabric for you). They didn't have it :(   So tonight I have to rethink the fabric choices for that dress. I was super excited about it which makes it even more disappointing....but I digress

Awhile back I made Miss A a gorgeous cowboy dress. It is one of my favorites. I had a request for a sibling set that was cowboy inspired but she didn't want the kids to look like Jessie and Woody from Toy Story. Here is the result:

I love this combo! The dress is a mix of 3 patterns, modified into one glorious dress. The straps and back each have elastic to get a better fit and longer wear, the skirt is full enough to twirl and I just love the vintage-ish buttons...sheriff stay inspired. The fabric is Michael Miller Horseshoe Red and  Lil' Cowgirl Blue.  I used a cow print that I had in stock.

Seriously, how can you resist this adorable print?! I had originally wanted to use the cow print for the suspenders on the shirt but it didn't look right. The brown looks so much better.

Tonight I'm going to work on a couple of Izzy tops and some leggings for Miss A who is growing WAY faster than I would like! I'm running out of pants long enough to fit her...I can't wait until it's warm enough for crops and dresses :)

The Jingle Dress

Wednesday, November 6, 2013 •

I love Christmas fabric. Usually I can barely decide which fabric to use when I'm designing my holiday dresses. This year I wasn't having much luck finding a stand out fabric when I walked into the local fabric store and saw this gorgeous Ann Kelle fabric on the shelf. I couldn't resist the little birds in their Santa hats!

I love the fit of this dress. Amelia is very comfortable and loves to wear it. I love the elastic at the waist, neck and sleeves that give this dress a great fit.

took awhile for our model to warm up to the camera

I love me some polka dots too!
Everything about the dress just screams fun to me. And that is what the holidays are about, fun and family. This dress wears and washes well. I love that I can thrown leggings and a long sleeve shirt under this and she can wear it over and over. Dresses are fun and all but they have to be able to be worn for more than for pictures, church and the holiday dinner.

The little red shabbie comes off the sash and can be used as a hair clip too. Do you love the hair band? I do! Shelley created it and I just love the bling. I'm so thankful for my very talented cousin and friend Andrea for taking these shots. We had a reluctant model and I was sure there might have only been one good shot in the bunch. I'm not exactly sure how she managed to capture all of these.

Seriously...this girl kills me!

The dress is now available on our Facebook page and I'll be listing it in the Etsy shop soon. I'm so exciting to share this adorable dress with you!
