Waiting game

Tuesday, January 29, 2008 •

I hate waiting...waiting for things that are out of my control, waiting for decisions to be made, waiting for days to pass.... the thing is I LIKE to be in control. I like to know what is happening when, where and how. I don't relish in uncertainty or the eliment of surprise. Sure surprises are great when they are birthday parties, gifts or special words/gestures from others.

Right now I don't want to wait. I want to know now. Will they go? Will they stay? How many days until we know for sure?

Questions that I don't have answers for...and I can't make the decisions...

Happy Birthday Mom!

Monday, January 21, 2008 •

Today a very special woman reaches a milestone. My mother has turned 50. I can hardly believe that because I can't relate that age to my mom. Now adays it isn't considered old but my mother has a spirit that is ageless. She is dedicated to her family, to her work and to her students. She gives so much of herself to others and deserves to be given so much in return.

Like many people I always said that if I won the lottery I would send my parents away on a dream vacation and that they would never have anything to worry about again. While I haven't hit the financial lottery I am rich in so many other ways and I have to thank my parents for that wealth. My mom is an extrodinary woman and I hope that one day when I'm a mom my kids will love and admire their grandmother as much as I do. If I can be half the mom to my kids as she has been to me then they'll be alright.

So Mom, I'm raising my coffee mug to you and wishing that I could be home for your special day. Enjoy your gift and we'll be home as soon as we can to celebrate with you.

The importance of cake

Cake..a food or a corner stone of celebration?

I think of it as an absolute necessity for each and every celebration. My earliest memories are of me sitting on a chair watching my mother decorate cake and then teaching me how to do it. I clearly remember my 3rd birthday. The party was outside and it was a fantastic summer day. My mom brought out her latest creation- a cake that was a clown holding a HUGE lollipop. I don't remember everyone that was there but I remember the warmth of the sun and my mom brining out the cake. What is a birthday without a cake that was designed just for the birthday bor or girl? What is a wedding without a cake that reflects the couple? It could be laid back cupcakes for the relaxed not to serious folk or an elegant fondant covered creation for those that want to impress.

It's amazing to me that simple ingrediants like egg, sugar, flour, butter and vanilla can turn into a clown, animal, car...the possibilities are endless and are only limited by the imagination of the creator. Cake makes people smile and fills a desire for something sweet, a hope of something spectacular and the joy that someone though of them.

This coming weekend I'm entering a creation into a cake contest based on literature. I have a vision in my head and I hope that I can bring it to life. My cake will be dedicated to my Aunt Marie who introduced us to Harry Potter and to my mom, little sister and friends who can't seem to get enough and will re-read the books for many years to come.

From your lips....

Fine George!

Life is interesting isn't it? A person can work their ass off thikning that hard work= rewards and that doesn't always happen. People can do everything humanly possible and bad things will still happen. The hardest part is that their isn't always someone to blame. Maybe that isn't the hard part, no the hard past is ACCEPTING that their is no one to blame. Blame obsolves people of their responsibility and allows the to direct their anger somewhere.

The winter blahs gave way to a pick me up this week. My friend was in from NL for work so we got to spend some time together. G calls us carbon copies even though I think we are very different. It was great fun and put me in a good mood. It makes me sad that so many of my closets friend live away.

humm...I think I'm having a pity party.

blah blah blog

Tuesday, January 8, 2008 •

So I don't know if I'm writing to myself or if others are reading this...I almost feel like its trite to have a blog that you are not completely honest in...who are you lying to? Yourself? others? what is the purpose? Is it because you only want people to know what you want them to know..are you afraid of how they will react to the truth? What really is the truth? Who are you afraid of hurting? Who will you really hurt.

Honesty...honestly it should be the best policy but is it always? Do white lies exist to protect yourself and others or is it all just a lie and it protects no one. Do you want to post it and out it out there or are you afraid of the perception, of "what will others think"?

Who am I taking to? me? you? no one? everyone?

I'm surprised I still have a blog

So I was surprised that I haven't been shut down. I warned you at the beginning that I'm not very good at keeping these things up to date but I am trying.

Vancouver was a great experience. I saw a few things that I hadn't seen before (Really, who picks up a pigeon off the street, kisses it, strokes it and talks to it and then carries it off with them?! The guy on Robson St that's who!) Stanley Park was really neat. I got some amazing photos that I have yet to post on Facebook or email to anyone. The course was really interesting and I was really busy the whole time I was there. The jetleg was a bit of a downer but it did get me a Friday off work.

We finished our living room finally! Boxes are unpacked, curtains are finished and hung and the rug and shelves are in place. My wonderful brother in law is coming over on the 26th to start the bathroom renovation and hopefully that will be finished by December 5th. Once that is done the main floor and the upstairs will be finished! I am so happy! The kitchen will eventually get done but we're looking at a complete remodel which means $$$ so that means saving for a bit to make that happen. Gordon wants to start the basement after Christmas. He's planning on knocking down a couple of walls to open the space up. The bathroom downstairs will hopefully get done just after upstairs is finished so that should already be done. Every time we finish a new task I fall more in love with our home. It's not just a house anymore.

This weekend is the Parade of Lights and we're going with Garnet and his family and then the boys are staying over for the night. They are too cute! We have so much fun with them...until they start to whine. That makes me wonder if being DINKS forever is a good idea....lol. Maybe...maybe not!

Time is flying!

OMG it's almost the end of October. I have not been great about updating but I've been swamped and haven't been online much at all. This past week has been pretty incredible for a lot of big and small reasons.

My curtains are finally up, I had my first paid wedding cake (it turned out pretty fantastic if I do say so myself!) and now we're gearing up for a two wedding Saturday. RyLee and Clay are coming for a visit so tonight we have to get the house ready for company. I know Halloween is just around teh corner but I truly can not wait until Christmas!!!

Almost but not quite....

So I nearly got scamed and I am very impressed that I was skeptical from the very start! Gordon and I put our lazy boy up for sale on craig's list last month and someone wanted it at full price. Great. Took forever to get the cheque and when I did it was for 4 times the amount of the chair. "Go ahead and cash it. I included my movers fees" Whatever. The cheque is destroyed and we still own the lazy boy. Oh well.

Going under the knife in 2 dyas to get my vision fixed. I'm nervous but it is a really common procedure now and I know a bunch of people that have had it done. I'm nervous but very excited that I will be able to see without putting things in my eyes or pushing my glasses up my nose! Should be an exciting day when I don't have to ask G for the time in the morning!

It's been awhile

Thursday, September 20, 2007 •

I'm not even sure anyone is checking or that it matters that I haven't rambled on in awhile. I've been really busy and tired and just haven't really bothered to string together the effort to update.

Our house is coming along. I think we're starting to lose a little steam...We're going to go to Kent tonight to get some of the supplies for our bathroom reno (they are having a sale). I really need to finish the curtains and hang some more pictures up. Gordon is going to do the touch up painting this weekend while we wait for our sofa to be delivered. Thank goodness that is finally coming. I had forgotten how much I preferred the IKEA sofa to the pull out. The comfy sofa is moving downstairs and so I am forced to further unpack to make room for the pull out in the little room downstairs.

Work is crazy. My boss is gone on a 3.5 week African safari and I am incredibly jealous. Although I'm not too sure that I would want to go to Africa. Europe is definitely more my speed. I guess its a good thing that I have 3 weeks to get reorganized and caught up. I have so much to do before I head to Vancouver for the Governance session! Ugh! It's a good thing that I like what I do....

I'm off to get my day started with a good jolt of caffeine....

September!! What the $%&#?!

Thursday, September 6, 2007 •

Excuse me but where exactly did the summer go? I'm wearing pants today because it was so cold this morning (I refused to wear a jacket on principle!). I can't believe that the summer is gone....my favorite season. I am a definite sun lover, much to the shagrin of some of my friends (Sorry George) there is nothing that I love better than the warmth from the sun. It just brightens your home, your work space and my day in general.

The only good thing about September is that the countdown to Hallowe'en decorating is on...maybe I should have called this blog "Just call me Martha!"

Empty Nest

Friday, August 31, 2007 •

So you are suppose to have empty nest syndrome until you are in your 50's and your kids have left to go do their own thing. This summer I have seen my family more than I have seen them in what feels like forever. In fact, my sister has been here all week for volleyball camp. It so nice having company around the house. I'm already getting that sad lonely feeling and she is still here for two more days... I think I never noticed in our apartment because Gordon and I were always on top of each other (figuratively speaking) and now we have all of this space. The projects are starting to wind down and I am finding myself thinking...what's next? What do I do now? I'm sure I will find something to occupy my time (I stoill need to make curtains for the living room). Oh my I'm sure this babbling is useless but there you have it. I am missing my family and anticipating missing my sister...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GORDON

Tuesday, August 28, 2007 •

Well, we're getting close! G turned 2-9 today! Birthday celebrations tonight should be fun!

I dream in Chocolate

Monday, August 27, 2007 •

So it was suppose to rain all weekend...perfect for painting, right? Well it was hot and muggy and I swear I sweated off 4lbs! Regardless, the living room, dining room and upstaires hallway are now finished! Gordon did a great job replacing some drywall and painting the stucco ceiling and the rooms are now so cozy! It's awsome to see things finally getting put together. Our window treatment went up in our room last night (thanks mom!) and I'm going to start putting that room together after I finish Gordon's birthday cake....29 tomorrow!

Tim the tool man

Wednesday, August 22, 2007 •

Well Gordon is actually more like Al. Bless him he is working his heart out on our house. Tonight we cleaned up the wallpaper residue from the walls in the main living area (that's right...our house came gift wraped. So well I would have thought that Julie and Annette did it) and Gordon fixed up all of the trim. Tomorrow night its plaster and sanding and then Friday and Saturday paint. At least that is how I hope it works out. I really want to unpack!

West ward bound

I am beyond excited! Today I received approval to go to Vancouver in November for a PD session. Mind you I won't get to see much of the city because I will be in meetings all day and working in my hotel at night but I am excited none the less. My application form is in (well it will be tomorrow) so here's keeping the fingers crossed that everything works out!

I spy with my little eye

Tuesday, August 21, 2007 •

What I wouldn't give to open my eyes in the morning and see the time on the alarm clock...yes my eyes are that bad. Poor G gets greeted with squinty eyes and "Honey, what time is it?" each and every day. Well I decided to go and see about getting that Lasik eye treatment done. I was told that I am a good candidate and that it should be a very simple procedure, in and out in less than 10 minutes....humm I would like to get paid that rate a minute! I almost fell out of the chair (bit hid it real well)! I am going to go and see at a few other places but at this moment I'm scheduled to have my eyes sliced open on September 29 and then I'll be off work for a few days. (Always a good idea to get these things done while the boss is on Africa!).

I wonder if Gordon will miss his usual morning greeting?
well I have finally done it...I know our lives probably isn't going to be interesting to alot of people but it's interesting to us so why not have a blog?

Gordon and I were married on July 10, 2004 and we just moved into our first house. Renovations are coming along nicely (no major problems) and most of our friends have growing families. This blog will be a place where we can post our adventures, triumphs and challenges.

Hope you'll visit us often!
